When a domain registration is not renewed, the name stops being yours. What follows depends on the registry and the registrar, but the first effects come quickly.
The domain's DNS records usually stop working once the registration lapses or is put on hold. A website goes offline and email to that domain stops arriving.
Many registries and registrars allow a limited time after expiry in which the owner can still renew. Its length and cost differ between them, so it should not be counted on.
After that, the name can be released, and anyone may register it. Someone else could then receive email or show a site at your old name.
The date is known long in advance. Turning on auto-renewal and keeping the registrar's contact address current covers most cases.
SSL Domain Detective lists domain registration dates with colours, so an expiry is seen early. Open SSL Domain Detective
