When a certificate expires, browsers no longer trust it, and the website looks broken to visitors. The site itself still runs; only the secure connection fails.
Browsers show a full-page security warning before the site loads. Some let visitors click through, many people turn back, and some settings block the page completely.
Programs that connect to your site, such as API clients or payment callbacks, usually refuse an expired certificate without asking anyone. The failure can go unnoticed until something stops working.
As soon as the server delivers a new, valid certificate, the warning disappears. Visitors do not need to do anything, though a server may need a reload to use the new file.
Expiry dates are easy to forget, and reminders may go to an old email address. A list of end dates catches the problem before visitors do.
SSL Domain Detective colours the list by how soon each certificate runs out. Open SSL Domain Detective
