Safety

It only reads public information

SSL Domain Detective does not renew or change anything.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ
Read-only.

The app reads public information that others on the internet can also look up: the registration date from the public registry service, and the certificate that a website sends to every visitor.

๐Ÿ”‘
No passwords needed.

SSL Domain Detective does not ask for a password and does not log in to your domain provider or your website.

๐Ÿ“ฑ
Your list stays on your phone.

The app has no account, no tracking, no analytics and no advertising network.

How it works

Where the dates come from

The registration date comes from the public registry service that the domain ending belongs to (RDAP). The certificate date is read from the website itself, on port 443, the same connection that your browser makes.

The domain names that you add go to the registry service and to the websites themselves. None of this is sent to us. Some registries do not publish the end date of a registration, for example for .de domains. For those domains the app shows the certificate date only. Dates can be missing or wrong, so please confirm important dates with your provider.

Help

Questions and answers

Is SSL Domain Detective safe?

The app only reads public information: the registration date from the public registry service, and the certificate that a website sends to every visitor. It does not ask for a password, does not log in anywhere and does not renew anything.

Where do the dates come from?

The registration date comes from the public registry service that the domain ending belongs to (RDAP). The certificate date is read from the website itself, on port 443. Dates can be missing or wrong, so please confirm important dates with your provider.

Why does a domain show no registration date?

Some registries do not publish the end date of a registration. For example, .de domains usually do not. The certificate date still works.

How do the colours work?

Red means 7 days or less, or expired. Orange means 30 days or less. Green means more than 30 days. Grey means no date was found.

How do reminders work?

Turn on reminders in Settings. The phone then shows a message 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before a date, at 9:00. The reminders are created on your phone and need no server. The phone keeps about 60 reminders, so the nearest dates come first.

What data leaves my phone?

The domain names that you add go to the public registry service (rdap.org and the registry it points to), and the app connects to each domain's website to read its certificate. The app does not send this information to us.

Where is my list saved?

Your list is saved only inside the app on your phone. There is no account, and we have no server that stores it. You can delete it at any time in Settings. If you delete the app, the list is deleted as well.

Is this professional advice?

No. SSL Domain Detective is for informational purposes only. It shows what public sources say at the moment of the check.

How do I report a problem?

Open Settings and tap "Report a problem or suggest an idea". You can add screenshots in the app, and your mail app shows the email before you send it. You can also write to [email protected].
