Certificate error or expiring soon: what is the difference?

Two things can be wrong with a certificate: it can be close to its end date, or it can already be failing. They need different reactions.

Expiring soon

The certificate still works, but its end date is near. There is time to renew, and each day counted down raises the urgency.

An error now

The certificate is expired, does not match the name or fails some other check. Visitors already see a warning, and the problem is live.

Why they are handled differently

A date ahead can be scheduled. An error cannot wait, because visitors and connected services are affected right away.

How alerts reflect this

Domain Night Watch alerts at 30, 14, 7, 3 and 1 days before the end. An error, or a certificate with less than 3 days left, comes through at any hour.

Domain Night Watch tells the two apart, so a deadline and a live problem do not look the same. Open Domain Night Watch
