How often to check depends on how long you can afford a problem to go unnoticed. For most domains, a few times a day is a sensible balance.
If you check once a month, a faulty change can sit there for weeks. If you check every few hours, it is found the same day, often before most customers notice.
DNS records change rarely, and answers are cached for the length of their TTL. Checking every minute would mostly repeat the same answer.
Domain Night Watch checks each domain every 6 hours. That is four times a day, which is enough to catch a change the day it happens.
A scheduled check cannot see changes that appear and disappear between two checks. It watches the state of the records at each check.
Domain Night Watch runs these checks for you, and alerts you only when something differs. Open Domain Night Watch
