A lapsed domain takes the website and email with it. Several reminders spread over the last weeks make sure the renewal is not forgotten.
A single email can be missed, filtered or sent to someone who is away. A series of reminders gives the date more than one chance to be noticed.
Domain Night Watch alerts at 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before the registration ends. The early alerts leave time to fix payment problems, and the last ones are a final warning.
The expiry date is read from the public registration data of the domain. For some domains the registry does not publish it, so there may be nothing to read.
The renewal itself is done at your registrar. An alert tells you when to look; it does not renew anything for you. Leave some time in case the registrar asks for a confirmation.
Domain Night Watch watches the registration date of each domain and alerts you at those days. Open Domain Night Watch
