The certificate provider usually sends renewal emails, but they can go to an old address or land in spam. A check from the outside does not depend on them.
They go to the address on the account, which may belong to someone who left. Filters sometimes catch them, and some automated certificates send no reminder at all.
It connects to the site the way a visitor does and reads the end date of the certificate that is actually served. If a renewal went wrong, the date shows it.
Several alerts spread over the last weeks leave room to act. Domain Night Watch alerts at 30, 14, 7, 3 and 1 days before the end.
An error, such as an expired or mismatched certificate, is more urgent than a date that is still ahead. It is worth an alert at any hour.
Domain Night Watch reads the certificate of each domain and alerts you at those days, or at once on an error. Open Domain Night Watch
