A website can be reached on http and on https, and visitors may arrive on either. A redirect sends everyone who comes in on http to the secure https version.
Old links, bookmarks and typed addresses often use http. Without a redirect, those visitors stay on the unsecured version, or see an error.
Type the http version of your address into a browser and see what happens. It should end up on the https address, with a padlock.
The redirect may exist for the start page but not for inner pages. Or it may loop, sending the browser back and forth until it gives up.
A page on https that loads some images or scripts over http can show a warning even though the certificate is fine. The fix is to load everything over https.
