Email stopped arriving: how to check your MX records

If email to your domain suddenly stops arriving, the MX records are the first place to look. They tell senders where to deliver, and one wrong entry is enough to break it.

Look them up

Query the MX records of your domain and compare them with what your email provider says they should be. Check the server names and their priority numbers.

Usual causes

A provider change left old records in place, a record was deleted during an edit, or all records were replaced by accident. A name server change can also remove the records.

When all of them are gone

With no mail servers at all, senders have nowhere to deliver, and email bounces or is lost. This is the most serious case.

After the fix

Once the records are right again, new email arrives. Email that bounced in between has to be sent again by the sender. This can take some time, because DNS answers are cached.

Domain Night Watch alerts you when the mail servers change, and at any hour if all of them disappear. Open Domain Night Watch
