DMARC is a short public record that tells receivers what to do with email that fails the SPF and DKIM checks for your domain. It is also how you can ask to get reports about it.
SPF and DKIM give results; DMARC says what you want done with them. Without it, each receiver decides alone. It also covers the address that people actually see.
The policy can be none, which only watches, quarantine, which asks receivers to treat failing mail as suspicious, or reject, which asks them to refuse it.
A DMARC record can name an address that receives summary reports. They show who is sending email in your name, including services you forgot.
Many businesses begin with none and read the reports. Once everything legitimate passes, the policy can be made stricter. The reports arrive as files from the receivers and are easier to read with a tool.
