How do I check the DNS records of a domain?

You can look up the public DNS records of any domain, including your own. Which tool you use matters less than knowing which record type to ask for.

The record types to ask for

MX shows where email goes, TXT holds SPF, DMARC and other text, NS lists the name servers, and CNAME shows aliases. A and AAAA hold the addresses of a site.

With a command-line tool

On most systems, dig TXT example.com or nslookup -type=TXT example.com shows the TXT records. Replace TXT with MX, NS or CNAME for the others. For DMARC, look up _dmarc.example.com.

Reading the answer

The answer lists each record with its value and its TTL. Several records of one type are normal. An empty answer means no record of that type exists at that name.

Why results can differ

Resolvers cache answers for as long as the TTL allows. A change you made a moment ago may not be visible everywhere yet.
